Książka jest antropologiczną analizą buntów chłopskich w czasach pańszczyźnianych (XVI-XIX wiek). Autor omawia przejawy chłopskiego oporu, wykorzystując do tego badania tzw. historii oddolnej (history from below), tradycje badań subaltern studies oraz koncepcję broni podporządkowanych. Wychodzi z założenia, że żaden bunt nie wybucha w próżni, zawsze jest poprzedzony tworzeniem się swoistej subkultury oporu, ma także własną logikę i cele oparte na tej subkulturze.
