The common theme of this monographic work is language and its culture. Language creates our reality the same way as we shape the language. The era of relativism in the realm of language studies resulted in interactional theories of language underlying the value of a language user in creating linguistic reality thus making language a living tissue interacting with its user the same way as they interact with each other. Realising this simple truth had vital consequences for foreign language pedagogy. Language is no longer seen as a set of rules to be mastered to near the competence of a native speaker. Present day linguistics sees any language user more as a linguistic island negotiating their legitimate idiolects and cultural preconceptions. If we suppose that language is the means of learning, be it literature, culture, language teaching or learning, we reach the world through our personal dialects. Not to be eclipsed by our solipsistic perception we need to accept a very active and autonomous stance in the ever-changing labyrinth of linguistic and cultural reality.
The present book is a collection of articles dealing with issues referring broadly to English studies as they function in the Higher State Vocational School in Pila. In this respect our institution mostly educates potential teachers of English as a foreign language offering courses enhancing pragmatic dimension of the linguistic universe. Our priority is to furnish students with practical knowledge of language per se as well as acquaint them with most modern theories and practices pertaining to methodology of foreign language teaching. Hence the core part of this monographic elaboration oscillates around issues connected directly or indirectly with improving language teaching practices or raising awareness of a language instructor regarding language related issues such as culture and literature.
