Słowo logika pochodzi od greckiego logos, co w bezpośrednim tłumaczeniu znaczy: rozum, słowo, myśl. Zgodnie z tym logika jest nauką o sposobach ścisłego i jasnego formułowania myśli, regułach poprawnego rozumowania i uzasadniania twierdzeń. Pytanie, na co komu logika, można by więc z powodzeniem zastąpić pytaniem: na co komu rozum? Właśnie... Rozum jest od rozumowania, a rozumowanie nie przychodzi samo z siebie, zwłaszcza to bardziej wyrafinowane, analityczne, krytyczne albo inaczej - to, które pomaga nam przeniknąć i pojąć otaczający nas świat.
