You are looking at Galle beach, on the southern coast of the island. This beach was one of the coastlines hit by the tsunami of 2004. To give an indication of the size of the waves, they reached half way up the largest palm tree, as they came in. Over 40,000 lives were lost in Sri Lanka alone (over 200,000 world wide).
